The Tecumseh Green Giants 50-and-over baseball team captured their second consecutive Vintage Baseball Federation of Ontario (VBFO) provincial championship last weekend, going undefeated in tournament play held at the Canadian National Baseball Hall of Fame.
The annual VBFO championship brought together top senior teams from across Ontario for a two-day tournament in St. Marys, a town known for its deep baseball roots and home to the Hall of Fame. The event celebrates competitive sport among older athletes while promoting camaraderie and lifelong participation in baseball.
The Green Giants opened the tournament on Sept. 20 with a 5-2 win over the Chatham Diamonds, followed by a 7-4 victory against the defending national champions, the Scarborough Maroons. With two wins under their belt, Tecumseh earned a direct berth in the championship final.
On Sept. 21, the Green Giants returned to the diamond with confidence and momentum, overpowering Chatham in the final with an 11-1 victory. The win secured Tecumseh’s back-to-back provincial titles, reinforcing their dominance in the VBFO circuit.
Led by a combination of strong pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense, the Green Giants showcased the depth and experience of their roster. The team’s performance also highlighted the growing popularity of senior-level baseball in Ontario, where athletes aged 50 and over continue to compete at a high level.
The championship weekend was not only a celebration of sport but also a tribute to the enduring spirit of baseball. Players, families, and fans gathered at the Hall of Fame grounds to cheer on their teams and honour the legacy of the game.
