Ontario Invests $826K to Help Windsor Apprentices Launch Careers in Skilled Trades

The Ontario government is investing $826,441 through the Skills Development Fund Training Stream to help new apprentices in Windsor gain the skills needed to succeed in the manufacturing and construction sectors. The funding supports hands-on training and safety certifications, preparing workers for high-demand, well-paying jobs while strengthening Ontario’s workforce and economy.

“This investment ensures that our newest electrical workers can gain the knowledge, safety certifications, and hands-on experience they need to succeed,” said Andrew Dowie, MPP for Windsor–Tecumseh. “It’s about building a stronger and safer workforce for the future.”

The funding will support the IBEW Local 773 Job Readiness Program, which equips apprentices with essential skills before they step onto job sites. Participants receive training in construction awareness, basics of electricity, aerial platform operation, working at heights, skid steer and forklift operation, confined space safety, first aid/CPR, and financial planning.

“IBEW Local 773 has trained 48 new young workers with best-in-class preparation,” said Karl Lovett, Business Manager and Financial Secretary of IBEW Local 773. “This program ensures they are safe, effective, and job-ready from day one.”

Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini emphasized the province’s broader commitment to workforce development: “We’re strengthening supply chains, growing a job-ready workforce, and building a more self-reliant and productive Ontario—one that can compete, deliver, and win.”

The Skills Development Fund Training Stream is part of Ontario’s $2.5 billion investment in workforce development, including an additional $1 billion announced in the 2025 Budget. Since its launch in 2021, the fund has supported over 1,000 training projects and helped connect more than 700,000 workers to in-demand careers.

Residents interested in participating are encouraged to contact IBEW Local 773 or other lead organizations directly.

With this investment, Windsor continues to be a hub for skilled trades training, helping young workers build strong futures and contributing to Ontario’s economic resilience.
