Several hundred Detroit Lions fans packed the Belle River Royal Canadian Legion for the annual tailgate fundraiser, transforming their game-day enthusiasm into charitable impact for the Rochester/Belle River Goodfellows. The festive atmosphere featured giveaways, prizes, and classic game-day food, while fans cheered on their team. The popular event has continued to grow every year, drawing larger crowds and generating increased support for families in need.
“We’re thrilled at the turnout for this event,” said Legion president Richard Brooks. “Lakeshore’s generosity made the day a huge success.”
The 2024 tailgate party raised an impressive $9,330 for the Goodfellows organization. The funds will directly support Christmas baskets for families in need throughout the region, ensuring vulnerable households can celebrate the holidays with dignity. This event represents just one component of the Goodfellows’ fundraising calendar. Throughout the year, the organization hosts multiple special events, including the popular Lakeshore Firefighters BBQ and the elegant Shimmer and Shine Gala.
While the community celebration was an undeniable victory, the on-field action proved more challenging. The Detroit Lions battled through significant adversity, including key injuries and controversial officiating decisions. Despite their resilience, the Lions ultimately fell to the Green Bay Packers 31-24. The close contest kept fans engaged throughout, and the shared experience strengthened the sense of community that made the fundraiser so successful.
Goodfellows president Rick Anderson expressed heartfelt appreciation for the overwhelming support. “Thank you all for coming out to the Royal Canadian Legion #399 Detroit Lions tailgate party in Belle River,” Anderson said. “We couldn’t do it without the help of so many local residents. Thanks to all attendees, volunteers, and staff!”
The event’s success reflects the spirit of giving that characterizes the Lakeshore community. By combining their passion for Lions football with charitable giving, residents made a tangible difference in the lives of local families during the holiday season.
